The Regal Persian Cat
Persian cats are the most popular domestic cat breed in the world. They can be found in millions of households but what is it about this pugnacious flat-faced breed that makes it so popular? With its pushed in nose, and glaring eyes it can look quite forbidding and mean which is completely contrary to its fun and loving nature. Persian cats are extremely devoted to their owners in typical aloof cat fashion. Of course, they seem to be inherently aware of their regal looks and beauty but at the same time, also appear to be able to not take themselves too seriously.
Ask any owner of Perisan cats and they will tell you exactly why this breed of cat is so popular—their beauty is matched only by their affection. As their name implies they are a breed developed in Persia, a country as exotic as the breed itself. Their origins go back beyond the 1600’s and they have for all that time enjoyed a status in the cat world second to none.
Persian cats make wonderful pets for people young and old, but there are a few things about this luxurious cat that prospective owners should take into serious consideration before deciding on this breed. The most obvious is their long, beautiful coat. While cats are typically very clean animals and groom themselves constantly a long-haired breed such as the Persian does require some assistance to maintain their majestic beauty. That long coat can create more aggravated cases of hairballs and even illness due to excessive consumption of the long locks when grooming themselves. This is easily remedied but is something that should be kept abreast of at all times with these gorgeous cats.
The Persian cats pushed in nose can be accompanied by breathing problems and the same flat-faced features cause a lot of tearing in the eye area that should be wiped gently with a moist soft towel daily to keep from building up and causing vision problems as well as stains and matting in the surrounding hair.
One very popular feature of the beautiful Persian is the endless variety of colors available. No matter what your preference for colors you will find it in this breed. While it is a common misconception that the Himalayan is a separate breed it is actually just the name of the pointed coloration variety available in Persian cats.
Once you have been owned by a Persian you will never question the reasons for the breed’s fame. However, as with any decision to bring an animal into your life, remember that these marvelous animals have a lifespan of up to eighteen years and require a considerable time commitment to their well-being and care for that time. If you do choose to devote yourself to this loving breed, be prepared to be regally adored.
