Missy Guerrero Scherber: Community Through Construction

The growth of T. Scherber has always been a labor of love for co-owners Missy and Trevor Scherber. Now they want to share that love with their community in Minneapolis and provide opportunities for others who are passionate about construction.

For Missy Guerrero Scherber, the path to her current work in construction all began with love.

“In 2014, I had just gotten my dream job doing fundraising for youth programs in downtown Minneapolis,” she says. “And then I met Trevor and it was love at first sight with a guy in an excavator.”

Even in their early days together, Trevor recognized Missy’s passion and talent for running the business, and he quickly introduced her to the backend side of managing his construction company. Missy leapt in with both feet and hasn’t looked back.

“I went into that office and was like, ‘We're going to get the backend of this company solid and cleaned up,’” says Missy. “’Our processes are going to be phenomenal. We're going to bring customer experience into the earthmoving industry.’”

The duo went on to marry and found T. Scherber, which specializes in demolition, excavating, and roll-offs. They’ve remained dedicated to a personalized approach to construction, even as their business has grown.

“We want to come into a job site and give you an analysis and say, ‘We see your plans, we see your survey, but here's what else we see,’” Missy notes. “’How can we partner together to perfect the work?’”

They’ve been quick to marry their hands-on way of working with new technologies in order to keep their projects moving smoothly.

“We are excited about bringing old-school principles and the old way of doing business to our job sites, whether that’s a handshake or an in-person meeting, and really combine that with the new way of doing business and earthmoving, which involves technology and using cloud-based applications,” says Missy.

That strategy has served them well over the past few years – they’ve built a name for themselves when it comes to work on high-end residential spaces, and are starting to branch out into commercial work as well. When it comes to competing for commercial work, they’ve been strategic about ways to help set their business apart and have pursued various certifications in order to do so, including the women-owned business certification (WBE) and minority-owned business certification (MBE).

“My goal is that what ultimately opens the doors for T. Scherber in the future is the work that we do, the execution, the expertise of our team, and the giving back we do within the community,” Missy comments. “We have these certifications that are exciting opportunities for the business to grow and I'm strategically using those, but my hope is that the work speaks for itself and grows the business in a new market.”

Throughout their business’s growth, Missy and Trevor have found a great support system in their local Cat® dealer, Ziegler, especially when they first started out and couldn’t afford to have a machine go down on the job.

“I remember the early days in business, when Trevor and I were doing everything, and I was running to Ziegler Cat at 11:00 at night and getting custom hoses cut because we’d blown a hydraulic hose,” Missy recalls. “And there they were, 11:00 at night, ready for me.”

Missy and Trevor know that their Cat dealer will be by their side, even as they move into a new commercial headquarters and continue to expand their business. While they’re excited to take on more projects, they also want to prioritize giving back to the community in Minneapolis with their work.

“I know those kids [in Minneapolis], I know those high schoolers, and we’re excited to be able to get our work downtown and use the business as a resource for hiring and letting the community actually work and make money,” says Missy. “I'm excited about the resources and the connections and relationships I have with that community that go beyond construction. Because when community and construction come together, big things happen.”
