Boost Jobsite Safety with Cat® Command for Excavating

Remote work means something different when you’re running construction or mining machinery. Most of the time, having a skilled operator in the seat and manning the sticks is essential for productivity. But sometimes, hazardous jobsites can make putting someone in the machine dangerous. That’s where Cat® Command comes in.

Cat® Command for excavating is a remote-control system for operating from a safe distance. It cuts the risk of working on dangerous terrain following disruptive processes such as blasting. It also reduces the risk of injury from rollovers or slides down hillside as well as when climbing on and off the machine.

With this system operators keep full control of the machine. It’s as if they were in the cab, with precise remote control allowing them to dig, lift and track from a safe working distance. Cat Command also decreases downtime during shift changes and reduces operator fatigue by eliminating the effects of vibration, noise and rough terrain. Plus, operators with medical concerns can return to work faster.

There are two Cat Command operating modules for operators:

Cat Command Remote Console

The remote console is a lightweight device that is suspended on the operator's chest by adjustable, backpack-style shoulder straps.

  • Operators work safely and comfortably while staying on-site and keeping visual contact with the machine.

  •  Operators can be up to 437 yards (400 meters) away.

  • Controls are fully integrated with machine electronics to provide the same control and response as if operating from inside the cab.

  • On-site communications infrastructure is not necessary for operation of the console.

  • The device uses either a 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequency communications protocol.

  • Operators see engine revolutions per minute (RPM), fuel level, hydraulic temperature, engine temperature, aftertreatment status, operation modes, pressures and machine warnings through the LED display.

  • The machine will shut down if the controller is tipped more than 45 degrees, indicating that the operator has fallen.

Cat Command Station

This is essentially a full-scale virtual cab with numerous display screens showing camera images from around the machine.

  • Operator works remotely in a comfortable seat equipped with familiar pedals, joysticks and switches.

  • The station can be located in a command center on-site or many miles away.

  • A comfortable, remote, indoor working environment means reduced operator fatigue.

  • Operator inputs are sent directly to the machine electronics via a dedicated radio transmitter/receiver, resulting in real-time implement control.

  • High-quality video delivers a clear view of the work area.

  • Operators can easily switch between machines or change jobsites with no downtime.

  • Trainers can stand beside an operator, without noise or movement.

The station also gives operators access to the machine’s advanced productivity features and operating modes.

Cat Command isn’t just for excavators, either. The control system works with Cat dozers and wheel loaders and has been designed to allow operators to easily swap over from one machine type to the next, or even switch to a different jobsite location altogether, with minimal disruptions or downtime. For added safety and security, Cat Command only allows one operator to be in control of a machine at any time.

Getting Cat Command
