A Legacy of Movement

Marching On was established in 2019 by Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems Division employees Wayne Bradley, James Batchelor & Sarah Doughty with a simple desire to encourage peers to incorporate movement into their day. From its humble beginnings in Peterborough, UK, the event has taken strides each year, both in participation and impact, so much so that Marching On has now evolved into a global phenomenon within Caterpillar.

The Evolutionary Journey

2019 saw the inception of a challenge titled "How Far Can You Go on Holiday?" With the seed planted by employee Adam Kilbon and localized to Peterborough, it attracted 250 participants, sparking a seed of inspiration. By 2020, the challenge expanded to 450 participants, crossing geographical boundaries, and permeating through various Caterpillar teams.

In 2021, a symbolic name change marked the birth of "Marching On," embracing a more universal appeal. The following year, the event garnered significant attention, with nearly 1000 participants!

Then came 2023, the year it truly skyrocketed. From fewer than 200 participants in 2019, the event swelled to a staggering 2,500 in 2023 — collectively covering enough miles to journey to the moon and back or complete 18 laps around the globe. The movement was no longer just about physical distance; it embodied a shared commitment to well-being within the Caterpillar organization.

The 2024 event is being led by the ACTivate ERG (Employee Resource Group) as it fits so perfectly with everything the ERG stands for.  This also allows the event to have a wider reaching platform and pull on more resources to ensure the event is successful for many years to come.

The Essence of Marching On

So, what makes Marching On more than just a fitness challenge? It's about recognizing the intrinsic connection between the well-being of individuals and the collective strength of Caterpillar. The event transcends the physical act of marching; it symbolizes a commitment to a culture that values health, camaraderie, and holistic well-being.

Beyond the Kilometers

Marching On '24 isn't merely a call to log kilometers; it's an invitation to break free from the monotony, explore new exercise routines, or elevate existing ones. Whether you're a lone participant or part of a team, the shared goal of embracing movement binds Caterpillar employees across the globe.

Holistic Wellness

Leading up to the event, the Caterpillar team doesn't just focus on the physical aspect. The Marching On '24 experience encompasses a holistic approach with yoga sessions, healthy eating tips, and recovery exercises. It's a comprehensive well-being hub tailored for the resilient individuals powering Caterpillar's success.

Why It Matters

In the grand scheme of things, Marching On is more than an event; it's a testament to the company's commitment to the people who drive its innovation.

Through Marching On, each step taken, each kilometer covered, is a collective stride toward a better future. It's not just about the numbers on the dial; it's about fostering a culture where wellbeing isn't an afterthought but an integral part of the Caterpillar experience.
