The Growing Prominence of Sustainability in the Oil and Gas Industry

As the energy transition gains momentum and increasing numbers of enterprises prioritize sustainability in their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, companies in the oil and gas sector are evaluating how they can integrate renewable sources of energy into their operations without sacrificing productivity.

Why Renewable Energy Now?

The drive toward decarbonization has become a priority across many market sectors – passenger and commercial vehicles, power generation, construction, mining – and forward-looking enterprises in the oil and gas market are pursuing greenhouse gas emission reduction targets as well.

Major energy companies are focusing on lower-carbon initiatives across their operations as a central component of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.  These investments in lower-emission solutions include changing power sources, lowering fugitive emissions, reducing flaring, increasing carbon capture, and changing power sources.

At Caterpillar Oil and Gas, we leverage technology and expertise from across our entire enterprise to help our customers in the energy sector meet their carbon reduction targets while supporting the productivity that keeps them competitive.

A Range of Approaches for Improved Sustainability

Oil and gas enterprises face many choices for improving the sustainability of their operations. The correct solution needs to account for numerous factors, including power needs, application types, duty cycles, fuel availability, jobsite footprint, and operating environments.

Dual-fuel capabilities are a field-proven strategy for reducing the emissions of engines and engine-driven generator sets on oil and gas worksites. Providing a payback in as little as a few weeks, Caterpillar’s Dynamic Gas Blending™ (DGB™) technology enables generator sets to use both natural gas and diesel with the flexibility to handle variations in fuel quality and engine operating conditions.

Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and other renewable fuels can be used as drop-in replacements for diesel fuel, which can help oil and gas customers reduce the impact of their operations on the environment, but does not significantly reduce CO2 at the tailpipe. Cat® engines have enabled operation on various renewable fuels for more than a decade.

As oil and gas companies integrate renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power into their off-grid operations, advanced energy storage solutions supply scalable grid stabilization. Caterpillar offers flexible, scalable and modular energy storage designs for a wide range of distributed energy system applications.

Looking forward, hydrogen is emerging as a fuel source that can help shorten the path to commercial availability. As an enterprise, Caterpillar already supports power generation applications with generator sets that can be operated on 100% hydrogen, and Caterpillar is collaborating on demonstration projects incorporating hydrogen fuel cell to produce power.
