Caterpillar Extends Industry Leadership in High Power Density Diesel Generator Sets with Six New 50-Hz Standby Power Ratings up to 3,500 kVA

For Worldwide Release: February 24, 2020
Release Number: EEPR0120

DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announced the introduction of six new 50-Hz standby ratings that deliver industry-leading power density while helping to reduce overall site preparation, transportation, installation and maintenance costs.

Caterpillar now offers the Cat® 3516E diesel generator set with the following 50-Hz standby power ratings and emissions thresholds:

  • three ranging from 3,000 kVA to 3,500 kVA that provide certification to U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions standards;
  • two from 3,000 kVA to 3,250 kVA that offer nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions under 2,000 mg/Nm3; and
  • one low-NOx 3,500 kVA rating for regulated environments and applications.

The Cat® 3516E diesel generator set with the 3,500 kVA rating offers an 8,800-kg (19,400-lb) weight reduction over a leading competitive product offering the same power output, while occupying 15% less floor space.

With the launch of these new power ratings, Caterpillar now offers diesel generator sets with industry-leading power densities that range from 850 kVA to 3500 kVA.

“Customers evaluate standby power solutions across many dimensions beyond power output and price,” said Bart Myers, general manager for Caterpillar Large Electric Power Solutions. “These new power ratings demonstrate Caterpillar’s continued investment in our engine and power technologies to give our customers superior product value accompanied by our unmatched design and dealer support.”

Cat 3516E generator sets are designed to meet the NFPA power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems and accept 100 percent block load in one step. They meet ISO 8528-5 G3 requirements for steady state and load acceptance.

The new power ratings are available with a low-, medium- or high-voltage frame alternator that enables quick load acceptance through exceptional motor starting capabilities. This feature eliminates the need to oversize the generator set due to motor starting requirements.

The Cat 3516E generator set utilizes the field-proven Cat ADEM™ A5 engine control module (ECM). This module seamlessly integrates all engine functions including ignition, governing and air-fuel ratio control for optimal performance while protecting the engine.

Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer service technicians are trained to service every aspect of Cat equipment.
