For Worldwide Release: May 12, 2020
Release Number: EEPR0520

DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announced that Island Power, S.A. (IPSA) has selected IASA PANAMÁ, the local Cat® dealer, to deliver 28 Cat diesel generator sets supplying a total of approximately 11 MW of prime power throughout Panama’s Pearl Islands and other remote sites off the grid.

Installed and commissioned by IASA in stages starting in late June and lasting through July, the power systems will join 20 Cat diesel and gas generator sets already supplying 16.2 MW energy for tourism operations, small businesses, and residences in the islands.

Known locally as Islas de las Perlas, the Pearl Islands are an archipelago of more than 200 small islands located about 30 miles (48 km) off the Pacific coast of Panama. They are noted for their white-sand beaches, scuba diving, whale watching, and wildlife preserves that include marine and bird sanctuaries as well as coral reefs.

“The Pearl Islands are known worldwide for their natural beauty and biological diversity, so it is essential for us to use reliable power solutions that provide the energy we need in an extremely fuel-efficient package,” said Oscar de Leon, general manager for Island Power. “IASA has delivered through high-performing systems that will help us preserve the delicate ecosystems of the islands for generations to come.”

“The power need in the Pearl Islands is a prime example of our customers’ expectations for capabilities across multiple dimensions, including high fuel efficiency, low emissions, a compact footprint, design and installation expertise, and uncompromising reliability backed by world-class service and support,” said Marlen Prado, territory manager for Caterpillar Large Electric Power. “Power solutions from Caterpillar are engineered to perform at the highest level with the most advanced technologies in the market.”
