Caterpillar Introduces 15 New Gas Generator Sets from 20 to 200 kW Rated for Emergency Standby, Demand Response and Prime Applications

For Release: February 2023

IRVING, TEXAS Caterpillar Inc. today announced the introduction of 15 new Cat® gas generator sets from 20 to 200 kW rated for emergency standby, demand response and prime operation that enable customers to use a wide range of gaseous fuels in small 60-Hz applications.

Available from Cat dealers in North America through a staged rollout into 2023, the natural-gas generator sets provide exceptional fuel flexibility by running on pipeline natural gas, propane and renewable natural gas. Caterpillar’s dual-fuel auto changeover technology allows users to connect both propane and natural gas sources to a single unit.

“The energy landscape is changing, and our expanded line of gaseous generator sets enables Caterpillar to support a wide variety of markets and applications,” said Retail Electric Power Solutions Vice President Jaime Mineart. “As a leading supplier of electric power, Caterpillar’s new generator sets provide owners of small enterprises with high-performing solutions offering fuel flexibility across an extensive range of power outputs―all backed by the expertise of the Cat dealer network.”

Designed for fast response and U.S. EPA-certified for emergency use, the generator sets are ideal for energy resiliency in small commercial businesses, industrial applications, and critical infrastructure such as fresh water and wastewater treatment plants. They are compatible with NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10, and they are UL 2200 listed.

The units are also EPA-certified for use in non-emergency applications, making them ideal for demand response and prime operation supporting microgrids, renewables and utility programs.

Caterpillar’s dual-fuel auto changeover technology utilizes natural gas as the primary fuel and automatically switches to a backup propane tank when the supply of natural gas is insufficient. This capability enables the system to provide resiliency that satisfies the requirement for onsite fuel.

Hardware is pre-installed on each of the new generator sets to enable access to Cat Connect Remote Asset Monitoring, which provides data visualization, reporting and alerts through an easy-to-use web interface or mobile app. Available with a subscription, it enables operators and Cat dealers to track and manage generator set operation, identify potential problems, perform remote troubleshooting, manage operational expenses, and leverage long-term archives of site performance history to identify opportunities for further operational and system enhancements.

Caterpillar also offers the Cat Active Management Platform (AMP), a proven distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) platform that helps customers monitor, manage, and monetize these gaseous generator sets and other Cat power solutions. Cat AMP can be applied with other distributed energy resource (DER) system components including Cat PVC Photovoltaic Modules and Cat Energy Storage Solutions, and it can also manage customer load reductions. The platform monitors patterns from the grid and client facilities, analyzes opportunities in energy markets, and then dispatches DERs to maximize return and monetize results without disrupting normal business operations.

The generator sets include Caterpillar’s standard two-year warranty for emergency standby and demand response applications, with a suite of additional extended service coverage options available. They can be factory-equipped with a steel or aluminum enclosure for superior sound attenuation, access for operation and maintenance, security and protection from the elements.

Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for sustainability, durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, parts and services, and customer value agreements through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer technicians are trained to provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and services that help customers optimize the total cost of ownership of Cat equipment.
