Caterpillar Launches Week-long Virtual Combined Heat & Power Event

For Worldwide Release: July 7, 2020

Deerfield, IL – Caterpillar is engaging the electric power industry through CHP Week, a week-long virtual event advocating combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration. In CHP applications, Cat® natural gas generator sets simultaneously provide electricity and heat energy for a facility's thermal requirements. Where grid power and boilers offer less than 50 percent efficiency, Caterpillar CHP systems can provide energy efficiencies up to 90 percent.

"CHP offers our customers an alternative to rising utility costs," says Bart Myers, general manager of Caterpillar's Electric Power division. "The total energy cost savings of CHP systems can generate payback as short as three years or less depending on local energy pricing and policies."

"Facilities with CHP can also operate on island mode in times of power outages, adding a layer of protection," states Myers.

As part of CHP Week, Caterpillar will be hosting a free CHP Webinar on Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. The webinar will feature David Gardiner, founder and executive director of the CHP Alliance, to speak on CHP policy opportunities. Additionally, Caterpillar dealers Carter Cat and Peterson Cat will present best practices in CHP design elements, and a panel of CHP experts will address questions. Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit hours (1.5) will be offered for webinar participation through Bradley University. Click here to register for the webinar today!

Throughout CHP Week, Caterpillar will share a variety of new CHP tools, including an animated video walking through the process of how CHP works. A CHP white paper, podcast, and a variety of CHP customer testimonials will also be shared.

During CHP Week, Caterpillar will be hosting a sweepstake allowing our social media followers the opportunity to win a variety of prizes. To participate in CHP Week, follow Caterpillar's Electric Power Division on Facebook or follow Cat Electric Power on LinkedIn. To learn more about CHP Week, visit Cat.com/CHPWeek.

"Caterpillar is committed to being our customers' best choice to execute their strategy and offering easy-to-execute CHP solutions," states Myers. "CHP offers several direct benefits to our customers, such as reduced energy costs through efficiency and avoidance of peak rates, resiliency from grid outages, and reduced greenhouse gases. We are excited to promote awareness of this great technology through CHP Week."

Caterpillar delivers innovative, reliable, and durable power systems with full lifecycle service agreements and financing solutions. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized dealer network.
