Digging Up the Past with Cat^®️ Equipment

If you thought archaeological digs were all about intense workers on their knees using a trowel and a brush, you will be surprised to learn that one of Europe's most experienced archaeology companies uses Cat® machines.

For more than 25 years, Ardis Archaeology GmbH has been digging up, exploring and documenting the past. From preservation projects to surveying to rescue excavation and 3D modelling, they have built an enviable reputation. They are also huge fans of Cat machines.

At the time of writing, they have been working alongside a construction company in Neustift in the Tyrol region of Austria, where they're using a Cat 301.8 Mini Excavator. There is a dig in Ellbögen, using the Cat 305 CR Mini Excavator with an embankment bucket. And an upcoming project in South Tyrol which will be around a castle in the forest up there, for which they will be using the Cat 310.

Ardis GmbH was a customer of Zeppelin Austria for some time before deciding to purchase their own machines. "Ardis had been hiring small hydraulic excavators from us for a few years. And not just in Austria either, but Germany and Italy too, which, thanks to our network, we've always been able to fulfil," says Christian Meschnik, the sales representative on the account. "So, when it was time for them to buy, they knew exactly what they wanted right down to the specifications and accessories. Their first machine was a Cat 301.8, with a Powertilt and a standard bucket package. They then added the sieve bucket later. I remember it well. After all, it's not every day you sell to archaeologists."

Both the Cat 301.8 and the Cat 305 CR have impressed Karsten in other ways too. "The user-friendliness surprised me the most. You don't need to spend 20 minutes looking through the manual to find the right settings. The menu navigation via the display is so simple and self-explanatory that you're up and digging in just a few clicks."

And Karsten has been equally impressed by Zeppelin. "I am very enthusiastic about Zeppelin's customer service. From the very first meeting with Christian, it has been a great experience. Whether that's the speed they get us spare parts, their quick service or their eagerness to help – it has been the perfect overall package."

While it's always great to hear from a satisfied customer, we are perhaps not surprised. After all, if history has taught us anything at Caterpillar, it's that offering high-quality products and great aftersales will never get old.
