Repair decisions can be complex. That’s why Cat® dealers work with you to meet your needs. They can help you pick the best repair plan for your budget, your equipment, your timeline and more.

Whether you’re tackling preventive maintenance, looking at an engine rebuild or incorporating Cat Reman parts, your dealer can help you find the best solution. Cat Reman Vice President and General Manager Bob Paternoga explains, “Our dealers offer a host of repair options to our customers at several different levels and several different price points.”

Cat Reman products are genuine Cat parts that have been remanufactured to like new quality and performance. And they’re available for a fraction of the cost of new with return of an acceptable core — i.e., your used parts. This provides additional flexibility for customers in a variety of applications, including the Construction and Resource Industries and Energy & Transportation segments.

“It’s no different than going to buy a car,” Paternoga explains. “Regardless of how much we decide to invest or not invest in a repair, we will typically ask, ‘What are my options?’”

FIVE TYPES OF REPAIR OPTIONS

  • Basic repair

  • Basic repair plus components

  • Dealer rebuild/exchange

  • Cat Reman

  • New Cat components

For a closer look at the full range of Cat dealer repair options, we’ll let Rebuilds Program Consultant Erik Tautkus outline the five available types of repairs and explain some of the differences that depend on industry and application.

BASIC REPAIR

A basic repair involves replacement of wear parts like gaskets, bearings and seals. It could also include preventive maintenance (PM) work or rebearing and reseal, depending on the industry. This type of repair is focused on parts that are designed to wear out the quickest to protect other, more expensive items. Hydraulic cylinders, pumps and motors, differentials and final drives are typically addressed during rebearing/reseal repairs. But this process doesn’t neglect the preventive details: PM kits, gasket kits, filters, bearings, fluids and spark plugs are also basic repairs.

Basic repairs exclude external parts like injectors, turbos, exhaust, electrical, electronics and accessories. “You'll rarely see a basic repair on complete engine and transmission rebuilds due to the larger number of parts that are replaced during rebuild, such as injectors, turbochargers and pumps,” Tautkus says.

BASIC REPAIR PLUS COMPONENTS

This type of repair is often referred to as a Rebearing and Reseal Plus or Basic Repair Plus Components, depending on the industry. For Construction and Resource Industries, this option includes all the basic repair parts as well as wear parts such as friction discs and plates. Parts that meet reuse and salvage guidelines are reused. Generally, this applies to components such as torque converters, transmissions and service brake groups.

For Energy & Transportation segments, this repair option could include component rebuilds, top-end overhauls, component upgrades and turbochargers.

Cat Reman offers a broad range of subcomponent options for this type of repair. Cat Reman subcomponents include injectors, turbos, water pumps, cylinder heads, cylinder packs, fuel pumps, camshafts, crankshafts, transmissions, spindles, wheels, sprocket hubs, brake anchors, starters, alternators, sensors, joysticks, displays and more.

DEALER REBUILD/EXCHANGE

This is where repairs start to get more involved as Cat dealers take on the job of rebuilding major equipment components. One example is a complete diesel engine rebuild. "Here, Cat Reman components could be used to help lower the total cost of the repair,” Tautkus says.

“Let's just look at an engine rebuild for example. The dealer could use multiple Cat Reman subcomponents during the rebuild of the engine. These items could include the use of a Cat Reman long block, piston packs, turbos, injectors, heads, etc. Instead of the dealer having to take these components off, inspect them and then rebuild them, they could use Cat Reman subcomponents to build the engine back up, lowering turnaround time and removing some cost from the rebuild."

Plus, Tautkus explains, “It eliminates the risk of having to increase the quote price based on items that the dealer wasn't expecting to have to replace.” Even better, all parts replaced with Cat Reman products have a same-as-new, 12-month Caterpillar Limited Warranty1.

CAT REMAN

When minimizing downtime is a critical factor, Cat Reman offers complete transmission, engine, final drive or other major component replacement. It’s a complete component exchange — remanufactured to Caterpillar performance and quality specifications with the latest engineering updates.

Cat Reman offers the benefit of a quicker turnaround, Cat Reman Product Support Manager Mike Nordmeyer adds. “If they're trying to decide between rebuilding and Cat Reman, you need to start talking about downtime. If they need the repair really quickly, they can opt for the Cat Reman component because they can get a quality part off the shelf2 and get that equipment running again as soon as possible.”

NEW CAT COMPONENTS

The quicker turnaround also holds true for new Cat components, Tautkus says. “In addition to Cat Reman, customers have the option of using a new component in that place — a new engine, a new transmission.” Again, the new component can simply be swapped for the old, getting the customer’s equipment back on the job with minimal downtime.

CAT REMAN ADVANTAGES

Cat Reman products fit neatly into the range of Cat dealer repair options, offering an outstanding balance of quality, value and timeliness. They are available at a fraction of the cost of new because you can return viable components to your Cat dealer in exchange for a core refund. And when you complete that return, you’re contributing to the sustainability benefits of Cat Reman’s remanufacturing processes.

Plus, Cat Reman products come with a same-as-new Caterpillar Limited Warranty1.

The affordability, strong quality and availability of Cat Reman products can help make repair decisions easier. Of course, you never have to make these decisions alone.

DEALER EXPERTISE COMPLETES THE EQUATION

Cat dealers are experts in the challenges their customers face. With Cat Reman products, dealers are equipped to get their customers up and running again as quickly as possible.

Caterpillar Remanufacturing Division Senior Vice President Brian Edwards explains that Caterpillar's dedication to offering Cat Reman products ultimately helps equipment owners get the most value from their equipment — and their businesses. “We want our customers to know that we have this full suite of offerings. You have new, but then you have Cat Reman, and you have rebuild/repair. It's about the customer experience — what helps the customer the most.”

Jeff Gutzwiller, product manager for Cat Reman engines and engine components, concurs. “I get personal satisfaction knowing that we are giving the proper repair options to our customers to allow them to keep their equipment up and running at the lowest total cost of ownership.”
