Growing a portfolio of electrified machines

Recent efforts to electrify machines are delivering significant gains in efficiency―and significant reductions in exhaust emissions.

Diesel-Electric

One of the best ways to reduce emissions is to minimize fuel usage. Our diesel-electric products help in that effort. We offer a number of diesel-electric machines for mining — like the 794, 796 and 798 AC trucks; R2900 XE underground loader; and 988K XE wheel loader. Large dozer electrification projects are in currently in progress. In some loading applications, diesel-electric machines can help reduce fuel burn. For example, the R2900 XE provides up to 30% fuel efficiency, while the 988 XE is up to 49% more efficient than the 988K in truck loading applications.

Fully Electric

Our fully electric machines rely on a single non-engine power source and produce zero exhaust emissions.

Some electric machines such as Cat Electric Rope Shovels are tethered to a power source. Not only do our electric rope shovels produce zero exhaust emissions, they also actually regenerate power that can be reused or delivered back to the power grid. In addition a number of electric Cat Rotary Drills are either in production or soon to be commercially available.

Battery electric vehicles like the new R1700 XE underground loader are also fully electric but are not tethered to a power source. Thanks to a mobile fast charging system called the Cat MEC500, the battery electric R1700 XE can be charged anywhere there is access to the mine’s power grid. Depending on the mine’s infrastructure, the battery can be charged in as little as 20 to 30 minutes.

We are working with a number of top-tier mining companies in the rapid development of electrified haul trucks for surface operations. The first outcome of those development agreements was the successful demonstration of our first battery electric prototype truck, a Cat 793, at our Proving Ground in Arizona in 2022.

We continue to leverage our expertise and are committed to building a broader range of electrified products that build on the legacy of our current offerings.

Trolley Assist

A power assist attachment for Cat trucks allows the machine to make use of external power during a certain section of the haul road. When connected to the trolley system, the truck’s propulsion system is powered purely with electricity from the power grid ― reducing fuel burn by up to 90% while on that section of haul road..

  • Boosts productivity: Up to 100% speed-on-grade improvement when connected to the electric grid
  • Reduces emissions up to 40%: Truck is powered by the electric grid during sections of the haul road
  • Improves engine life up to 25%: Decrease in diesel fuel burn reduces wear and tear

Where appropriate, we are exploring this technology with owners of Cat ultra-class electric drive trucks.
