ARE YOU READY FOR THE USE OF RENEWABLE AND ALTERNATIVE FUELS? CAT® ENGINES ARE READY FOR SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS

A number of renewable and alternative fuels can be used as drop-in replacements for diesel fuel in Cat engines. See “Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations,” (SEBU6251) at https://parts.cat.com/en/catcorp/machine-fluids for details.

Houston, Texas – For decades, Cat® engines have helped operators throughout the world in various industries, and Caterpillar remains committed to helping customers succeed with new solutions such as engines powered by renewable and alternative fuels. Many of these fuels which include hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO, also called renewable diesel), gas-to-liquids (GTL), and fuels of similar chemistry and specifications, can be used as a drop-in replacement for diesel fuel. They can reduce emissions such as unburned hydrocarbons (UHC), soot, and carbon monoxide (CO). They may also reduce NOx emissions under certain engine loads and cycles on a lifecycle analysis basis. In addition, HVO fuel is sourced from renewable feedstock that reduce greenhouse gases. Most recently Caterpillar conducted promising back-to-back tests performed at Caterpillar's Large Engine Center on a Cat 3516E, 3,000 ekW, 60 Hz diesel generator set, running on diesel and 100% HVO.

“The use of renewable and alternative fuels in Cat Marine engines is one of the first steps in decarbonizing your fleet. Renewable fuels reduce the carbon footprint of your fleet on a life cycle analysis basis. Your Cat engines are ready to run on many renewable and alternative fuels without any specific engine conversion or changes to maintenance practices,” says Jon Jackson, Caterpillar Marine Product Manager.

Caterpillar testing of HVO in Cat 3516E, showed that in addition to NOx, smoke and soot emissions reductions, the time recorded to start the 3516E was faster using HVO fuel than diesel, while the time to reach steady state speed was almost equal. Such results suggest positive impacts for the use of alternative and renewable fuels in engines for various applicational use in industries such as Marine.

Please refer to the Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations (SEBU6251) at https://parts.cat.com/en/catcorp/machine-fluids for the specifications the renewable & alternative fuels must meet for use with your Cat® engines.
