Caterpillar Oil and Gas Highlights Sustainable Gas Compression Solutions at the 2021 GPA Midstream Association Convention

Caterpillar Oil and Gas to Attend 2021 GPA Midstream Association Convention

September 2021

Houston, Texas – Caterpillar Oil & Gas is pleased to participate in the 2021 GPA Midstream Convention to be held September 26 – 29 in San Antonio, Texas. The company will be joined by premier dealers, Warren Cat, Wagner Equipment, Mustang Cat and Cleveland Brothers. Product experts will be present at the Caterpillar booth to discuss the portfolio of gas compression engines and electric motors, and the latest sustainability trends for the industry. Cat® engine upgrades and uprates for specific gas compression engines will also be a key topic during the show.

Caterpillar is committed to developing solutions and advanced technologies in support of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Goals and recently acquired CarbonPoint Solutions, a U.S.-based carbon capture technology company with processes that can be applied to engines and turbines at oil and gas sites. Combining CarbonPoint Solutions’ patented technology with Caterpillar Oil & Gas solutions will help customers meet their climate-related objectives through reduced greenhouse gas emissions

Additionally, Caterpillar continues to make investments aimed at improving the capability of hydrogen-powered solutions and replicating them across engine platforms to support customers’ plans for a reduced-carbon future.  This includes offering Cat generator sets capable of operating on 100% hydrogen on a designed-to-order basis in late 2021, and forthcoming commercially available power generation solutions that can be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen.

“We live in an ever-changing environment where there is more focus on environmental impact than ever before, and we’re laser focused on developing technologies in support of new products and upgrades that reduce our products’ emissions footprints. We’re excited about the future and well-positioned to help our customers cost-effectively bridge to a cleaner energy future,” comments Michael Coppinger, product definition manager for gas compression, Caterpillar Oil and Gas.

Caterpillar Oil & Gas offers several products and solutions to help operators reduce emissions including G3600 A4 engines, G3516 TA engines, electric motors, and upgrade/retrofit kits.

Since 2015, the G3600 ADEM™ A4 has demonstrated itself as an industry game changer with over 5.5 million hours accumulated in the field. With proven technology that is exceeding expectations, the G3600 ADEM A4 engines deliver more horsepower, fuel flexibility, 40% less NOx, 20% less CO, and 60% less VOC than previous models.

Both powerful and proven, Cat G3516 TA engines are built upon the legendary G3500 engine platform. When configured with the Caterpillar ADEM A4 control system and air/fuel ratio control, and a customer-supplied three-way catalyst, NOx emissions stay at or below 0.15 g/bhp-hr.

Cat electric motors for gas compression deliver the same quality and productivity you expect from Cat engines, with the additional benefit of producing less noise and emissions. Products range from 1,000-10,000 HP at 60 HZ and 50 HZ globally. Cat electric motors deliver high operating efficiency and performance while requiring virtually no maintenance.

For customers looking for a sustainable and cost-effective solution for their fleets, upgrade and retrofit kits are a favorable option. Low emission upgrade kits are available to take older G3500 engines that do not support today’s emission standards to the next level. Upgrade and retrofit kits lower NOx levels to 0.5 g/bhp-hr to keep your older engines working productively, promoting a full life ahead. Retrofit kits improve horsepower ratings, altitude performance, and more.

“We recognize customers have older assets that have plenty of life left in them. The G3516 has been around since 1985, and as Caterpillar continues to develop new technologies improving horsepower and lowering emissions, we’re continuously thinking about how we can offer minimally invasive and economical upgrades for those assets in the field that still have a lot of life,” said Coppinger.
