Marine Customers Achieve Emission Reduction Goals Through Caterpillar’s Emission Reduction Kits

EPA Approves Caterpillar Marine’s new Cat 3512 & 3516 Tier 3 Engine Upgrade

Houston, Texas – Caterpillar Marine is proud to announce the recent EPA approval of the Cat® 3512 & 3516 Tier 3 engine upgrade solution. Tug services company, AMNAV Maritime Corporation worked with Caterpillar and local dealer, Peterson, to install the upgrade, further benefiting from Caterpillar’s technology, services, and product capabilities. Over the course of the project, Caterpillar’s team of product experts identified the necessary solution to upgrade an engine to Tier 3 status, conducted the physical overhauls and performed emissions testing. This upgrade allows AmNav to continue operating the vessel in an area that has challenging and evolving emissions requirements.

“The Caterpillar Tier upgrade solution sets Caterpillar apart from our competition.  No other manufacturer in this space offers Tier Conversion upgrades as an option to extend the useful life of a customer’s engine.  Our customers appreciate that Peterson and Caterpillar can provide them with solution options to select from, including repowering with new Tier rated engines or converting an existing engine to an advanced Tier level. Peterson Power Systems is engaged and looking forward to working with more customers on modernizing their fleets through solutions like this,” says Jason Blacker Parts & Services Sales Representative for Peterson Power Systems.

“The EPA approval vindicates our hard work and demonstrates our focus on sustainability. Now, more customers can take advantage of this new upgrade for their 3512 and 3516 engines to Tier 3, thus helping reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions. In collaboration with our Caterpillar dealer network, this upgrade is an example of how we’re committed to supporting our customers with their sustainability goals,” comments Caterpillar’s General Manager for Marine, Derrick York.

Whether customers are driven by regulations or a need to modernize, the Tier 3 upgrade solution helps lower overall fleet modernization costs and gets vessels back on the water faster. Verified by the EPA, the solution covers select 3500 upgrades for mechanical unit injectors (MUI), electronic unit injectors (EUI), and Tier 1 and Tier 2 Cat engines to achieve Tier 3 (Reduction % in PM, NOx, HC, and CO).

“Great services, safety, and innovation are at the forefront of our operations to maintain our fleets and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with Caterpillar and Peterson Cat on the new engine upgrades. Cat’s solution offerings allowed us to upgrade our vessels at a fraction of the cost of a repower, minimized downtime, and enabled better emissions. We’re looking forward to additional service solutions that the Caterpillar team is working on to enhance the experience of owning Cat engines,” says Milt Merritt, President & COO of AMNAV.
